Résumé : After some comments on the concept of spatio-temporal structure, and a discussion of community, guild and functional group concept as used in spider ecology, various empirical data on horizontal, vertical and temporal distribution of spiders are presented. Within functional groups and between them, there is generally a large overlap of species niches. In many cases, ecologically equivalent species coexist in space and time, despite of some differences in microhabitat preferences. the roles of habitat structure and competition in the structuration of spider communities are discussed in the light of recent work. Most of experimentations failed to prove the actual existence of interspecific competition. Therefore, a general theory of coexistence is needed: some suggestions are made to progress toward this goal.
